Staying out of prison

by Alechia
(Eagle Rock, VA)

In the year of 2000, I was sentenced to 9 years in the Virginia Correctional Center for Women. On February 3, 2007 I was released. I relocated, that is the main thing and started completely over with nothing but the clothes on my back. I got a job, surrounded myself around positive people and now am getting ready to graduate from college and going back for my bachelors degree. What works is that one has to WANT to change, no one can do that for you but yourself. A positive support system, stay busy doing productive things, and think about your experience while locked up. I have learned from that and now know that there is nothing worth going back for. Think positive and be positive, and never, never give up!!

Alechia,
Thanks for posting your experiences. Well said, desire plus a strong support system is crucial. I am sure it is encouraging to others to know people like you have transitions successfully. The best to you!
