Early Release Programs

What is the calculation for early release? If a person is sentenced to 1 year in jail and is a trustee how is the early release calculated? Is good behavior counted?
This is a question that will be dependent on whether you are asking about a state or federal inmate.
It will also depend on whether your state (if it is a state inmate) has a parole board. Some states do not have parole boards and have what is called determinate sentencing. In those states, you know how much time you will do on a given conviction the day you go to prison.
In parole states, the time served is a decision of the parole board. Some parole board web sites will include an annual report that may include the average time served on various convictions.
Many states have "good time" laws. Basically, for every day in prison that you are "good" you get a reduction of the end of your sentence. In my home state, for every day you have no major disciplinary reports, you get 1.2 days off of your sentence. If a state computes good time, this obviously will affect your release date.
Please do not send questions regarding specific release information for your family or friends. I DO NOT have the ability to find this type of information.
